Figuers collection, 1764-1965.

Collection of historical and genealogical materials, primarily relating to Major Nathaniel F. Cheairs and the Cheairs family, but also including materials on the Overton family and the families of Bledsoe, Clendening, Figuers, McCoy, Norfleet, Patterson, Perkins, O'Neal, Sherrell, Taylor, and Worsham. Of special interest are the Civil War letters and memoir of Maj. Nathaniel F. Cheairs, 3rd Tennessee Infantry, CSA. The letters (1862-1864) were written from prisons at Fort Warren (Mass.) and Camp Chase (Ohio) and comment on Gen. Gideon Pillow's conduct at Fort Donelson and the treatment of prisoners of war. The memoir covers 1861 to 1865 and provides detailed observations about Cheairs' Civil War experiences. The collection also includes some published materials about Nathaniel Cheairs. The diary (1881-1885) of Harriet Pointer Cheairs primarily concerns daily life in Maury County, Tennessee. There is also an account of the Battle of Franklin (1864) written by Thomas Norfleet Figuers; a copy of a thesis entitled Life and activities of John Overton by Frances Clifton; a photocopy of the statement of Dr. Hanson Catlett relating to the Charles Dickinson-Andrew Jackson duel; and genealogical materials compiled by the collectors, Sherrell and Alice Overton Figuers, for inclusion in Dr. John Boddie's Historical southern families, volumes 3 and 5.
